Zero to Three Baby to Big Kid Newsletter
The Baby to Big Kid newsletter is written for the intended audience of parents or families. However, I was thrilled with their mini-article on how to use the toilet and found it helpful for my development as a professional. The article was written in very easy-to-understand terms, which would help parents to understand the very complicated process of potty training. It helped me because it showed me a different way to describe this process to parents.
I did not see anything in this issue or the previous one that explained how economists, politicians, or scientists contribute to the early childhood field.
The organization website has great tips on supporting children and families who live in poverty. One of their tips is to remember that children are children and they need the same stimulation, support, and love as all other children maybe even more.

Mr. Starnes Potty Training can be tricky, I'm going through it now and he has been the most relaxed with it. Maybe because he's the last one and I realize that no child just goes through whole life without learning how to use the toilet, I think we have plenty of time. It's no stress, not that it was with the other boys but I had myself on a deadline with them. It's nice to be able to learn from previous mistakes like not realizing how much time they have but you live and you learn. The articles that provide helpful tips to parents are valuable because they taught me warning signs and helpful tips on how to get through certain phases and milestones. Every parent should in some way be apart of a resource like that.
ReplyDeleteToilet learning seems to be culturally sensitive developmental milestone. We encourage parents to notice if the child is dry right after nap and to put them on the toilet then. As the muscle control shows developmental readiness. I have been concerned by parents that have been influenced by advertisers and the comfort of disposable diapers; hence, postponing toilet learning.
ReplyDeleteI think reading literature and publications directed toward parents and families is very beneficial as an educator. So often, we get caught up in the professional and acedemic jargon of education, that we forget how to relate to the parents. Once again...I love this website :)
