Global Children's Initiative
The Global Children’s Initiative
The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University was founded in 2006. In order to discuss and concern children around the world The Center on the Developing Child developed the Global Children’s Initiative with three broad objectives:
1. To reframe public discourse about the early childhood period
2. To support innovative, multidisciplinary research and demonstration projects
3. To build leadership capacity in child development research and policy
With these objectives in mind The Global Children’s Initiative focus on early childhood development by assessing quality in early childhood programs, piloting assessments to measure child development and expand effective interventions to improve preschool around the world. They also work to ensure child mental health by increasing their efforts to provide services. The Global Children’s Initiative also works to find ways to help children in natural disasters.

Joseph, When I read the organization's priorities, the priority one was to adapt work conducted in the United States. Do you think that early childhood systems in the United States can be reframed to have global relevance?
ReplyDeleteAssessing quality, piloting assessments to measure child development, and expanding on currently effective interventions seems like a good start to improving preschool around the world. I see many similarities in this method to the policy recommendations in the Kagan article from this week (2009).
ReplyDeleteKagan, S. L. (2009). American early childhood education: Preventing or perpetuating inequity? (Equity Matters: Research Review No. 3). Retrieved on October 1, 2012 from Campaign for Educational Equity website: http://www.equitycampaign.org/i/a/ document/9833_EquityMatters_Kagan_Final.pdf
It seems to me supporting research and developing leadership roles in early childhood education are pivotal in reforming both early childhood education policies and perceptions. It is time for early childhood education to be viewed as the foundation for not only childhood but living.
ReplyDeleteMr. Starnes what I have gathered besides what we have learned within our discussions and assignments the last six weeks is the amount of resources available to us as educators and advocators. Learning this now is invaluable and each classmate has a different resources building on what we already know. Making our list longer and stronger. Global Children's Initiative is a great resource and they provide tons of services all around the country.
