I am interested in language development: how it works, why
it works, what does it mean the whole kit-and-caboodle. For my research simulation, I have decided to
focus on the subtopic of how does language affect social development. I have chosen this particular focus because
this year I have a child with a speech delay.
“Bob” is beginning to be able to produce single words; however, he
cannot combine sentences into words. In
the beginning of the year the other children in the class appeared to shun, “Bob”
I believe due to his inability to verbally communicate with them. I am interested in learning more about the
extent that these two areas of development are intertwined. I have learned that conducting literature
reviews can help shape your focus and inform your hypothesis. I have also learned that it is important to
become familiar with the different paradigms available because they are the
models so to speak, of how our beliefs line up.
As I begin developing this simulation, I am not sure what to do after
the literature review. How should I
frame my hypothesis? I would also like
help with knowing what steps to take to begin collecting data, should I use
qualitative or quantitative methods?

ReplyDeleteBased on the subtopic you have chosen and the reasons you gave for your choice, I think that a qualitative approach is the best method to use in collecting your data.
ReplyDeleteCognitive language development refers to how well a child is able to understand, process and produce language. Social development is how a child interacts and plays with parents, other caregivers and friends. There are many child development theorists, such as Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget, who spoke about the role of language on children’s social and cognitive development. According to Vygotsky, one of the most important parts of cognitive development is language. He believed that language is critical for cognitive and social development. Within this theory, language occurs in three stages: social speech, egocentric speech and inner speech. Piaget referred to the cognitive development occurring between ages 2 and 7 as the preoperational stage. In this stage, children increase their use of language and other symbols, their imitation of adult behaviors, and their play. For further readings, the following books might be useful:

Joseph,
ReplyDeleteMy research methods suggests qualitative based on, "research conducted in a natural setting that seeks to understand a complex human behavior" (p. 50, 2010). Also, the hypothesis seeks to find relations between variables or the predicted outcome (2010). Essentially, what are your variables and what correlation do you think there is between variables?

Mr. Starnes, since Bob is important to you finding out the results will be a journey that I can't wait to share with you. Knowing this hits close to home for you makes it that much more intriguing on what you will present. Language is important and I want to know the results and how you will use them to help him. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteYou are on a path of great discovery! I have a 7 year old little boy with a speech delay. AJ has been working with an SLP for the last three years and is now participating in a specially designed curriculum to help with his reading and spelling. We have learned so much about how speech impacted his social and emotional development. Much like "Bob", AJ was difficult for others to understand at first and shuned by others. When he met with difficults communicating he would often get frustrated and become physical. His tendency to "blow up" would frighten some of his classmates and led to even more exile from the others. We have been through the process of testing several different theories and have finally come to a place where we are seeing tremendous growth both congnitivly as well as socailly. Best of luck with your research and let me know if I can help in any way.
